I'd like to apply for the Registered Nurse role in your Acute Medical Assessment Unit. I've spent six years on busy acute medical wards in Christchurch and Timaru, and at Kōwhai Hospital I care for up to five acute medical patients a shift, including patients on continuous monitoring.

An assessment unit needs nurses who notice a patient going downhill early. On my ward I use the early warning score to recognise deterioration and escalate to the medical team so patients are reviewed in time. Two years on a 28-bed general medical ward at Harbourview Hospital made me confident with IV antibiotics, fluids and peripheral lines, and I've since preceptored four new graduate nurses through their first six months.

Your unit appeals to me because so much of the work is about getting each patient to the right place with the right plan, and that is the part of my job I enjoy most. I lead discharge planning with patients, whānau and community teams, and I'm committed to culturally safe care for Māori patients and their whānau.

I'm registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with a current annual practising certificate, and I'm comfortable working a full roster. I'd welcome the chance to talk with you about the role.
