I'd like to apply for the Head Teacher role at Tōtara Grove Early Learning. I'm a fully certificated early childhood teacher with six years in centre-based and kindergarten settings, and at Pīpī Early Learning Centre I lead a team of three teachers caring for 10 infants and toddlers.

Leading a room has taught me that good teaching depends on a team that plans together and families who feel part of it. I plan primary caregiving routines around each child's rhythms, and in the past year I settled 14 new infants using gradual, family-led settling plans. I write regular learning stories for my key children, and family comments on our online portfolios have grown from a handful a month to most families. I also mentor a provisionally certificated teacher through her induction, meeting weekly and observing her practice each term.

Before Pīpī I spent two years at Kākāriki Kindergarten in Henderson, where I built a transition to school programme with two local primary schools and started weekly Mandarin and te reo Māori songs that helped several new Chinese families feel welcome. I'd like to bring that whole-centre view to a head teacher role, supporting teachers across every age group.

I hold a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) from Unitec, a full practising certificate with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and a current paediatric first aid certificate. I'd be glad to visit the centre and meet the team.

Common mistakes

What gets early childhood teacher letters skipped.

  • Writing a long statement of your teaching philosophy.

    Keep it to what you do day to day, like how you plan from children's interests or settle new infants. Managers can ask about philosophy at interview.

  • Mentioning Te Whāriki without showing how you use it.

    Link it to real practice, such as learning stories, planning or te reo Māori in everyday routines.

  • Leaving out your certification status.

    Say whether you're provisionally or fully certificated with the Teaching Council. Centres need to know for ratios and funding.

  • Forgetting whānau.

    Show how you work with families, like growing their comments on online portfolios or using family-led settling plans.
