Dear Rachel,

I'd like to apply for the Healthcare Assistant role on your orthopaedic ward. I have five years in hospital and aged care, and at Matai Park Hospital I support up to eight post-operative patients a shift with washing, mobilising and meals, alongside two registered nurses.

Patients after surgery can change quickly, and I see my job as noticing and speaking up. I take and record observations and report changes to the nurse straight away, including a patient's falling blood pressure that led to an early medical review. I keep fluid balance and food charts accurate so nurses and dietitians can act on them, and I act as a patient watch for confused and high falls-risk patients, with no falls on my watches in the past year. Before that I spent two years as a caregiver at Kōtuku Care Home in Feilding, where I was chosen to show new staff how the hoists work.

Helping people get moving again safely after surgery is the part of my work I find most rewarding, which is why an orthopaedic ward appeals to me. I also speak Tongan and English, and often help Pasifika patients and their families feel at ease.

I hold the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) (Healthcare Assistance), I'm Police vetted, and I have current first aid, moving and handling and infection prevention certificates. I can work days, afternoons and nights, including weekends, and I'd be glad to meet and talk about the role.

Common mistakes

What gets healthcare assistant letters skipped.

  • Describing yourself as caring and compassionate without any examples.

    Show it with something you do, like building routines that make showers less distressing, or noticing a change and telling the nurse.

  • Leaving out observations and charting.

    Say that you take and record observations and keep fluid balance and food charts. Hospital wards look for these skills first.

  • Not mentioning which shifts you can work.

    State whether you can do days, afternoons, nights and weekends. Wards fill rosters around it.

  • Describing a patient in a way that could identify them.

    Keep examples general, like 'a patient's falling blood pressure', with no names, dates or details.

Do I need a cover letter for a healthcare assistant job?

Hospitals and larger providers often ask for one. A short letter lets you show how you work with nurses and patients, which a list of duties can't.

Can I move from aged care into a hospital role?

Yes. Personal cares, safe moving and handling and dementia care all carry over. Point to those skills and any observations you've done.

Should I mention the languages I speak?

Yes. Speaking a patient's language helps them and their family feel at ease, and many New Zealand hospitals value it.
