How do I know what transfers?

Paste a job ad from the field you're moving into. SmartCVs lists what it asks for and marks each requirement your roles, study and certifications answer. What's left is the honest gap, and a course or certification you add to your profile counts from then on.

What happens to the skills from my old career?

They stay in your profile. Each tailored CV puts the skills the job asks for first and leaves off the ones it doesn't, and the list of changes shows which were left off. Nothing is deleted, so they're there for the next job that wants them.

Will the cover letter explain why I'm changing careers?

The letter is written from your profile and the job ad, so it leads with the experience that matches this job. It doesn't know why you're making the move unless you say, so add a sentence of your own about it before you send it. You can edit any part of the letter.

Does it make things up?

No. It rewords and reorders what's already in your profile. It has no way to add an employer you never worked for, and if a rewrite adds a number your record doesn't have, it's thrown out. Every CV comes with a list of what changed.
