Karen Doyle, Principal

Mānuka Grove School, Palmerston North

Re: Team Leader, Years 4 to 6

Kia ora Karen,

I'm applying for the Team Leader, Years 4 to 6 role at Mānuka Grove School. I'm a fully certificated primary teacher with six years in Years 3 to 6, and for the last two years I've led literacy across a syndicate of four classes at Tōtara Primary School.

Leading a team means helping other teachers do their best work. As literacy lead I run moderation and planning sessions, and after professional learning I introduced structured literacy approaches across the syndicate. In my own class of 28 Year 5 and 6 students, and before that with Year 3 and 4 classes at Kererū School, I use assessment data to group students and target teaching.

I'd like to lead a team at a school that puts the same weight on whānau as I do. I hold learning conferences with whānau each term, bring te reo Māori into the classroom, and ran Kererū School's kapa haka group with a colleague. Your school's focus on partnership with whānau is what drew me to this role.

I hold a full practising certificate with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, and two referees are available, including my current principal. I'd welcome the chance to visit and talk about the role.

Ngā mihi,

Emma Walsh

  1. 1Opens with the job and the proofIt names the role and year levels, then gives the leadership experience that makes her ready for it, all in two sentences.
  2. 2Evidence of leading teachingModeration, planning sessions and introducing structured literacy show she already leads colleagues, and the assessment point shows her own practice.
  3. 3Why this schoolIt connects the school's focus with things she already does, like whānau conferences and kapa haka, so the fit is shown rather than claimed.
  4. 4Certification, referees and a visitPrincipals need a full practising certificate and a current principal as referee, and offering to visit is normal and welcome in New Zealand schools.

Opening lines

Other ways to open.

The first line decides whether the rest gets read. Each of these names the job and leads with proof. Swap in your own facts.

  • “I'm applying for the Year 5 and 6 teaching position, bringing six years of teaching in Years 3 to 6 and two years leading literacy across a syndicate.”
  • “I'd like to apply for your Literacy Leader role, having introduced structured literacy approaches across a syndicate of four classes.”
  • “As a fully certificated teacher who holds learning conferences with whānau each term, I'm applying for your Year 3 and 4 classroom role.”
  • “I'm applying for the Team Leader position with experience running moderation and planning sessions for a syndicate of four classes.”

Common mistakes

What gets primary teacher letters skipped.

  • Writing a teaching philosophy instead of evidence.

Keep beliefs to a line at most, and show them through what you do, such as using assessment data to group students.

  • Not tailoring the letter to the school.

Read the school's charter or strategic plan and link one of its priorities to real work you've done.

  • Leaving out certification and referees.

Confirm your practising certificate with the Teaching Council, and say who your referees are, including your current principal.

  • Going over a page.

Three or four focused paragraphs are enough. Put detail on your CV and save the stories for the interview.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

How long should a teacher's cover letter be in New Zealand?

One page at most. Principals often read a letter before the CV, so make each paragraph count.

Should I mention te reo Māori in my cover letter?

Yes, if you use it in your teaching. Give a real example of how you bring it into the classroom rather than a general statement.

Who should I address the letter to?

Usually the principal, by name. For some roles the ad names a deputy principal or the board, so check who's hiring.
