Builder cover letter example

Dear Sarah,

I'm applying for the Residential Site Manager role. I'm a Licensed Building Practitioner (Carpentry) with nine years on residential new builds and renovations, and since 2021 I've run a crew of three at Rimu Homes, taking houses from foundations to handover.

Keeping a build on programme is most of a site manager's job, and it's what I do now. I coordinate subcontractors and inspections so builds stay on time, carry out restricted building work under my licence, and run daily hazard checks to keep the site safe and tidy. Before Rimu Homes, four years framing, cladding and fitting out renovations at Tasman Renovations taught me to work closely from plans and specifications.

Common mistakes

What gets builder letters skipped.

  • Not saying whether you're a Licensed Building Practitioner.

    State your LBP licence and class in the first paragraph, because it decides whether you can carry out or supervise restricted building work.

  • Describing the trade instead of your own work.

    Say what you personally do on site, such as running a crew or coordinating inspections, rather than what builders do in general.

  • Promising to finish jobs early or under budget.

    Stick to what you can back up, like keeping builds on programme by coordinating subcontractors and inspections.
