Tania Moeke, People and Culture Manager

Kūaka Foods, Waitara

Re: Senior HR Advisor

Kia ora Tania,

I'm applying for the Senior HR Advisor role at Kūaka Foods. I'm a generalist HR advisor with seven years in engineering and community health, and at Paritūtū Engineering in New Plymouth I advise 25 managers across a workforce of 320, from workshop staff to engineers.

Much of my work is helping managers through hard processes so they're fair and follow the law. I've guided managers through 18 performance and disciplinary processes, none of which led to a successful personal grievance. I ran the consultation for a restructure of the fabrication team, and 9 of the 12 affected people were redeployed into other roles. I also rewrote our employment agreement templates and six core policies, and trained managers on the changes.

I run recruitment end to end as well. I cut our average time to hire from 52 to 34 days by setting up structured interviews and a shared hiring calendar. Before that, at Ngāmotu Community Health, I coordinated recruitment for about 80 roles a year and built a monthly report on turnover, leave and sick days that the leadership team used to plan staffing. A large shift-based workforce like yours would use both sides of that experience.

I hold a Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Employment Relations from AUT, I'm a member of HRNZ, and I'm a New Zealand resident. I'd be glad to meet and talk about the role.

Ngā mihi,

Chidinma Okafor

  1. 1Opens with range and reachSeven years and 25 managers across 320 staff show she's used to a busy generalist role, which is what a senior advisor job needs.
  2. 2Results without breaking confidenceNumbers and outcomes, such as no successful grievances and 9 of 12 people redeployed, prove sound process without a single name or detail.
  3. 3Shows the other half of the jobFaster hiring and a staffing report show she adds value beyond employee relations, and the last line links it to the employer's workforce.
  4. 4Qualification, membership and work rightsHer degree, HRNZ membership and residency answer three questions an HR manager would ask early, and the close stays simple.

Common mistakes

What gets hr advisor letters skipped.

  • Describing a case to show what you can do.

Give the number and type of cases and the result. Any identifying detail tells the reader you'd share theirs too.

  • Claiming knowledge of employment law with nothing behind it.

Show it through processes you ran fairly, agreements you rewrote or grievances that didn't succeed.

  • Leaving out the business result.

Connect your work to what the employer cares about, such as faster hiring or people redeployed rather than lost.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

Should an HR advisor mention the Employment Relations Act in a cover letter?

You can, but it's stronger to show you apply it: fair performance processes, proper consultation and agreements you've updated.

Is HRNZ membership worth mentioning?

Yes. It isn't required, but it shows you keep your knowledge current, and a single line near the end is enough.

Can I move from an HR coordinator role to an advisor role?

Yes. Lead with any advice you already give managers and the processes you've supported, and keep the admin to a line.
