Skills and keywords

What hr advisor job ads look for.

Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

  • Employee relationsThe heart of most advisor roles. Give the number and type of cases you've handled, not the details.
  • Employment Relations ActNew Zealand ads often ask for sound knowledge of it. Show it through the processes you've run, such as fair performance and restructure processes.
  • Restructure and consultationSay how many roles were affected and what happened to the people, such as redeployment. It shows you care about the outcome, not just the paperwork.
  • GeneralistIf you cover the whole range, from recruitment to exits, use the word. Many mid-sized employers want one person who does it all.
  • HRISName the system, such as Employment Hero, ELMO or Workday. Employers want someone who can run it and pull reports from it.
  • Coaching managersGood advisors help managers handle issues themselves. Show how many managers you advise and what changed.
  • Health, safety and wellbeingOften part of HR in smaller firms. Mention return-to-work plans or wellbeing programmes you've run.

Common mistakes

What costs hr advisor CVs interviews.

  • Describing cases in too much detail.

Give numbers and types, such as "18 performance and disciplinary processes", never names, teams or what someone did. A hiring manager will judge your discretion from your CV.

  • Saying "strong knowledge of employment law" and stopping there.

Show it in action: processes you ran fairly, agreements you rewrote, grievances you helped avoid.

  • Leaving out the business result.

Connect your work to something the employer cares about: faster hiring, lower turnover, fewer disputes, people redeployed rather than lost.

  • Listing only admin tasks.

If you've moved from coordinator to advisor, lead with the advice you give managers. The admin can sit in one line under your earlier role.

New Zealand and Australia

What changes across the Tasman.

New Zealand

New Zealand HR advisors work under the Employment Relations Act 2000, which covers personal grievances; these must usually be raised within 90 days, or 12 months for sexual harassment, so employers want advisors who get the process right first time. Every employee must also have a written employment agreement.

New Zealand CV format

Australia

In Australia, the National Employment Standards set minimum entitlements that awards, enterprise agreements and contracts can't go below, and every new employee must be given the Fair Work Information Statement, so say if you've worked with awards or agreements. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

How do I show HR experience without breaking confidentiality?

Talk in numbers and types: how many cases, what kind, and the result, such as none leading to a grievance. Leave out names, teams and details.

Do I need HRNZ membership to get an HR advisor job?

No, it isn't required. But membership, and chartered membership later on, shows you keep your knowledge current, so list it if you have it.

Can I move into HR from another role?

Yes. Many advisors start in administration, payroll or recruitment. Lead with any people work you've done, such as hiring, onboarding or rostering, and any HR study.
