Skills and keywords

What recruitment consultant job ads look for.

Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

  • Full desk (360)Means you handle both clients and candidates. Say so if you do, because many agencies hire only for this.
  • Billings or fees against targetThe number agency directors want first. Give it as a percentage of target if you'd rather not share the dollar figure.
  • Business developmentShow new clients won and how: cold calls, referrals, site visits. It's what turns a consultant into a senior.
  • Permanent and contractThey're different skills and different income. Say which you do and the volume of each.
  • HeadhuntingIn short markets like engineering, clients pay for candidates who aren't looking. Show you can find them.
  • Applicant tracking systemName it: JobAdder, Bullhorn or another. Agencies want someone who keeps the database clean from the first week.
  • Candidate careRetention figures prove it. Say what share of your placements were still in the job after three or six months.

  7. 7Screened up to 200 applications a week and ran reference and work rights checks on every shortlisted candidate

Common mistakes

What costs recruitment consultant CVs interviews.

  • Leaving out billings or placements.

Agencies judge you on results. Give placements a year and billings as a percentage of target, even if you don't give dollar figures.

  • Describing the recruitment process instead of your results.

Every recruiter sources, screens and interviews. Say what came of it: roles filled, time to fill, candidates who stayed.

  • Not naming your market.

Say which sectors and regions you recruit for. A client or agency director hires for your network and market knowledge.

  • Naming clients the agency wouldn't want shared.

Describe them instead, such as "a civil contractor" or "a national bank". It shows you respect client confidentiality.

New Zealand and Australia

What changes across the Tasman.

New Zealand

New Zealand employers must check that a candidate from overseas has a visa that lets them work before they start, and Immigration New Zealand's VisaView lets registered employers do it online, so say if you've run work rights checks.

New Zealand CV format

Australia

Some Australian states license labour hire; in Queensland, for example, every labour hire provider must be licensed and businesses must only use licensed providers, so mention any contract or temp work you've managed under similar rules. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

Should I put my billings on my CV?

Yes, in some form. A percentage of target is common and keeps commercial details private. You can give the dollar figures at interview if asked.

Can I move into recruitment from another career?

Yes. Sales, hospitality and customer service are common routes. Lead with targets you've hit and relationships you've built, and name the sector you already know.

How is an agency recruiter's CV different from an in-house recruiter's?

Agency CVs lead with billings and clients won. In-house CVs lead with roles filled, time to hire and cost saved on agency fees. Write for the one you're applying to.
