Dear Philippa,

I'm applying for the Senior Quantity Surveyor role. I'm a quantity surveyor with seven years on both the contractor and consultant side, on commercial, education and apartment projects up to $40 million, and I'm a member of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

At Te Whanganui Cost Consultants in Wellington I prepare cost plans at each design stage for school and commercial projects from $2 million to $40 million, and I run tender analysis for 10 to 12 projects a year. I assess monthly progress claims and variations, and kept one $18 million project within 2 percent of its approved budget. Each month I report cost and risk to clients in plain language, so boards can decide quickly.

My three years as an assistant quantity surveyor at Kāpiti Construction mean I know how a contractor reads a cost plan. I measured and priced subcontract packages, prepared monthly payment claims that were paid on time, and tracked variations on site, recovering about $250,000 on one apartment job.

I now guide a graduate quantity surveyor through measurement and their first cost plan, and I'd like a senior role where that is part of the job, alongside more of my own client work. I hold the New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Level 6) (Quantity Surveying), and I'd welcome the chance to talk.

Common mistakes

What gets quantity surveyor letters skipped.

  • Listing duties without project sizes.

    Give the value range of your projects and one result, like a budget held within 2 percent. Scale is how QS employers judge experience.

  • Hiding contractor experience when applying to a consultancy, or the other way round.

    Show how one side helps the other, such as knowing how a contractor reads a cost plan. Experience on both sides is a strength.

  • Writing in heavy technical language throughout.

    Keep it plain. If you say you explain cost clearly to clients, the letter itself should show it.
