Dear Priya,

I'm applying for the Senior Project Manager role in your technology team. I have nine years delivering business change and technology projects in insurance and energy, and at Kōtuku Insurance in Wellington I led the replacement of the claims system for 300 staff, a $4 million project delivered on budget and three weeks ahead of the revised date.

A senior project manager needs to keep large teams on track and give leaders clear choices. I run a team of 12 across business analysts, developers, testers and an external vendor, and I report monthly to a steering committee on progress, risks and spend, with clear decisions asked for. When our online quotes project stalled, I reset it around a smaller first release that went live in four months. At Moana Energy I managed six smaller projects a year and kept schedules, risk registers and budgets up to date for a portfolio of 20 projects.

I'd like to take on larger technology programmes where the change for staff matters as much as the system. Planning training and support so a go-live lands well is the part of the job I care about most.

Common mistakes

What gets project manager letters skipped.

  • Describing projects without budget, size or outcome.

    Give the budget, how many people it affected and whether it landed on time and on budget. That's how project roles are compared.

  • Only telling success stories.

    Include a project you turned around, like a reset or a smaller first release. Employers want to know how you act when things go wrong.

  • Listing methods without showing you use them.

    Rather than just naming agile or PRINCE2, show them at work, such as steering committee reporting or a phased release.
