I'm applying for the Leading Hand Welder Fabricator role in your structural shop. I'm a qualified welder fabricator with ten years in heavy and structural steel, including my four-year apprenticeship, and since 2020 I've fabricated structural steel for commercial buildings and dairy factories at Paritūtū Engineering in New Plymouth.

A leading hand is trusted to get the drawings right and the welds through testing. I set out and fit up from shop drawings, raising drawing errors before cutting so we don't pay for rework. I weld in all positions with FCAW, and last year my repair rate on ultrasonic-tested welds was under 2 percent. I keep weld maps and inspection records up to date, so every job leaves with its paperwork complete, and I TIG weld stainless pipework and tanks to hygiene finish for food processing clients.

My apprenticeship at Waiwhakaiho Fabrication was on trailers, farm machinery and water tanks, cutting, rolling and bending plate up to 20 millimetres. I'd like to take the next step in a structural shop where I set out the work for others as well as build it.

I hold current AS/NZS ISO 9606.1 and AS/NZS 2980 qualifications for FCAW in all positions, a Site Safety Card, and a full driver's licence with a forklift (F) endorsement. I'd be glad to meet on the shop floor.

Common mistakes

What gets welder fabricator letters skipped.

  • Saying you can weld without naming your qualifications.

    Give the standard, the process and the positions, such as AS/NZS ISO 9606.1, FCAW, all positions, and say they're current.

  • Calling your welds high quality without proof.

    Give a test result, like a repair rate on ultrasonic-tested welds. It says more than any adjective.

  • Leaving out the paperwork side.

    Mention weld maps and inspection records. Shops working to structural standards need someone who finishes the paperwork as well as the weld.

Do welder fabricators need a cover letter in New Zealand?

Not for every shop job, but a short letter helps for leading hand, structural or stainless roles, where the employer wants to know your tickets and the work you've done.

Should I list every welding process I can do?

Lead with the process and positions the job needs, and mention others in a line. A focused letter reads better than a long list of processes.

Is my apprenticeship worth mentioning if I've been qualified for years?

Briefly, if it adds range the job can use, like heavy plate or farm machinery work. Keep the focus on what you've done since.
