I'm applying for the Leading Hand role in your heavy diesel workshop. I'm a qualified heavy diesel mechanic with nine years on trucks and trailers, including a four-year apprenticeship, and at Kaimai Heavy Diesel in Tauranga I service and repair a fleet of 60 trucks and 90 trailers for port and log cartage customers.

A leading hand needs to find faults quickly and keep the fleet on the road. I diagnose engine, transmission and electrical faults with dealer diagnostic software, which has cut our repeat repairs, and I prepare vehicles for certificate of fitness inspections, with most passing the first time. I mentor a second-year apprentice through engine and brake work, and I'm on the one-in-four after-hours roster for roadside breakdowns. During my apprenticeship at Mātai Transport in Rotorua, I kept service records up to date in the workshop system so the fleet stayed compliant.

I'd like to take the next step in a busy fleet workshop, where getting trucks back to work quickly matters to the customer. Guiding apprentices and helping set the standard for the team is where I want to grow.

I hold the New Zealand Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering (Level 4), a full Class 4 licence to road test the work and my own full tool kit, and I'm a New Zealand resident. I'd be glad to come in and meet the team.

Common mistakes

What gets diesel mechanic letters skipped.

  • Listing every system you've touched.

    Pick the two or three the ad cares about, such as diagnostics or air brakes, and give an example of each.

  • Leaving out your licence class.

    State your licence class, like Class 4, so the workshop knows you can road test and move vehicles.

  • Not saying what you work on.

    Name the type of fleet and its size, such as trucks and trailers for log cartage, so the employer can see the fit with their own vehicles.

Do diesel mechanics need a cover letter in New Zealand?
