Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

  • ISO 9606 / AS/NZS 2980Structural and pressure work ask for a current welder qualification. Say the process, positions and when it's due.

Common mistakes

What costs welder fabricator CVs interviews.

  • Writing "experienced welder" with no processes named.

    List each process (MIG, FCAW, TIG, stick) and the materials you weld with it. Ads screen on those words.

  • Leaving out your welder qualification or letting it look out of date.

    Put the standard, process and positions in your details, and say it's current. Structural employers check it before they check anything else.

  • Describing the work without saying what you built.

    Name the products and clients: portal frames, tanks, trailers, platforms. It shows the scale and type of work you can take on.

What changes across the Tasman.

New Zealand

Structural steel welding in New Zealand is done to AS/NZS 1554.1, which uses ISO 9606-1 to qualify welders, with AS/NZS 2980 adding local requirements. If you hold a welder qualification to these standards, list the process and positions.

New Zealand CV format

Australia

Welding standards are shared between Australia and New Zealand, and anyone doing construction work in Australia also needs a White Card from general construction induction training. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

Should I list my weld tests separately?

Put them together in your details: the standard, the process, the positions and whether it's current. A separate line for each test only adds length.

I'm a production welder. Can I apply for fabricator jobs?

Yes, if you can read drawings and fit up. Say which parts of the job you already do, such as setting out or tacking, and be honest about the rest.

Should I mention crane and forklift tickets?

Yes. Moving heavy work safely is part of the job, and employers are glad not to have to train you.
