Kia ora Steve,

I'm applying for your Apprentice Carpenter role. I've worked for six years as a construction labourer on commercial and residential sites in Christchurch, and I hold the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) (Carpentry). I'd like to turn that time on site into a trade, with a builder that works on both kinds of job.

At Port Hills Builders I worked alongside builders on 12 residential new builds, from site set-out to handover clean, cutting and carrying framing, fixing building wrap and helping stand wall frames. Since 2022 at Ōtākaro Construction I've supported carpenters and concreters on commercial builds of up to four storeys, helping set up formwork and place concrete on 30 to 40 pours a year.

I take site safety seriously. I report hazards and near misses at toolbox meetings and have had no lost-time injuries. I keep the site tidy at the end of each day, which helped it pass every weekly safety audit last year, and I move materials by forklift so other trades have a clear site.

I hold a current Site Safety Card and a full driver's licence with a forklift (F) endorsement, and I'm available for early starts and Saturdays. I'd be glad to meet on site whenever suits you.

Common mistakes

What gets construction labourer letters skipped.

  • Saying you're a hard worker and leaving it there.

    Show it instead: the number of builds or pours you've worked on, a clean safety record, or early starts and Saturdays.

  • Leaving out your tickets.

    List your Site Safety Card and any forklift endorsement near the end. Site managers check them before anything else.

  • Not saying what you want next.

    If you're aiming for an apprenticeship, say so and point to the carpentry you've already done. Builders take on people with a plan.
