Jess Carter, Store Manager

Harbour & Home, Mount Maunganui

Re: Senior Sales Assistant

Kia ora Jess,

I'm applying for the Senior Sales Assistant role at your Mount Maunganui store. I have three years in homewares and fashion retail, and at Pōhutukawa Home in Tauranga I'm trusted to open and close the store.

Your ad asks for someone who can look after customers and keep the store running smoothly. I help customers choose furniture and homewares and follow up their special orders, and I process sales, returns and lay-bys, balancing the till at close. On busy weekends I unpack deliveries and keep the floor stocked. Before that, at Karaka Clothing, I served customers and ran the fitting rooms while I was at school, and set up window and in-store displays for new ranges, which is work I'd like to do more of.

I'd like a role with more responsibility, and a store that puts real care into its displays and styling is a good fit for what I enjoy most. Having worked in both fashion and homewares, I'm comfortable helping customers with a quick purchase or a big one that needs a special order.

I'm available weekdays, weekends and late nights. I'd be glad to come in and meet you.

Kind regards,

Mia Tipene

  1. 1Opens with the job and the proofBeing trusted to open and close is strong evidence of reliability, so it goes in the first paragraph where a store manager will see it.
  2. 2Evidence matched to the adIt picks up the ad's two needs, customers and a smooth-running store, and answers each with real tasks: special orders, the till, stock and displays.
  3. 3A simple reason for this storeIt ties the move to more responsibility and her interest in visual merchandising, which she has done before.
  4. 4Availability and a friendly closeRetail rosters run on availability, so stating it plainly is useful, and the close keeps the tone warm and brief.

Opening lines

Other ways to open.

The first line decides whether the rest gets read. Each of these names the job and leads with proof. Swap in your own facts.

  • “I'm applying for your Retail Assistant role, bringing three years in homewares and fashion stores and experience opening and closing.”
  • “I'd like to apply for the Visual Merchandiser role, having set up window and in-store displays for new ranges.”
  • “As a retail assistant who balances the till at close and handles sales, returns and lay-bys, I'm applying for your Key Holder position.”
  • “I'm applying for your part-time Sales Assistant role and I'm available weekdays, weekends and late nights.”

Common mistakes

What gets retail assistant letters skipped.

  • Saying you're a people person without an example.

Describe how you help customers, like helping them choose furniture and following up on special orders.

  • Forgetting to mention availability.

Say which days and hours you can work. For retail it often decides who gets an interview.

  • Using a letter written for a different store.

Name the store and role, and mention what you'd bring to that kind of shop, whether it's fashion, homewares or something else.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

Do I need a cover letter for a retail job?

Not always, but a short one can help you stand out, especially for senior, key holder or full-time roles where lots of people apply.

What should I write if my experience is from part-time jobs at school?

Use it. Serving customers, running fitting rooms or setting up displays is real retail experience, so describe what you did and what you were trusted with.

How long should a retail cover letter be?

Three short paragraphs is often enough. Cover the role, your best examples, and your availability.
