Pharmacist cover letter example

Pharmacy owners want a pharmacist who is safe and quick at the bench and who brings in the funded services that keep a pharmacy going. This example is from the same pharmacist as our CV example, applying to manage a community pharmacy, and it only uses facts from his CV.

Dear Graham,

I'd like to apply for the Pharmacist Manager role at Kaituna Pharmacy. I have six years in community pharmacy, counting my intern year, and I now run the dispensary at Harbourside Pharmacy in Mount Maunganui. We handle about 350 items a day with two technicians and keep waiting times under 15 minutes on most days.

Much of my work is in services as well as dispensing. I grew enrolments in our long-term conditions service from 60 to 140 patients, with regular reviews of adherence and side effects, and last winter I gave over 900 funded and private vaccinations, including flu clinics at two local workplaces. Before that, at Kaimai Community Pharmacy in Tauranga, I clinically checked prescriptions from three general practices, set up blister packing for 45 older patients living at home, and kept the controlled drug registers accurate through two audits with no issues found.

A pharmacy that is building its clinical services is where I do my best work. I enjoy explaining medicines in plain language, and I speak Vietnamese, which has helped Vietnamese-speaking patients understand their treatment since my intern year. I also supervise an intern pharmacist through the intern training programme, with weekly reviews of her progress.

I'm registered with the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand with a current annual practising certificate, and I'm an authorised pharmacist vaccinator. I'd be glad to meet and talk about the role.

Common mistakes

What gets pharmacist letters skipped.

  • Writing only that you dispense accurately.

    Every pharmacist dispenses. Give the items a day, what you catch at the clinical check and the services you run.

  • Leaving out services and their numbers.

    Vaccinations, long-term conditions and blister packing matter to owners. Say how many patients or vaccinations.

  • Not saying which scope you're registered in.

    Name the Pharmacy Council, your scope and a current APC, and add vaccinator authorisation if you have it.

Do pharmacists need a cover letter in New Zealand?

Often, yes. Owners and hospital pharmacy managers read them to see which services you've run and how you deal with patients, which a CV only hints at.

Should I mention my intern year in the letter?

Only briefly, such as in your total years or where you trained. Spend the letter on your registered practice.

Should I mention languages I speak?

Yes. Explaining medicines in a patient's own language is a real strength in community pharmacy, and owners value it.
