Megan Kereama, Practice Owner

Waipā Sport and Spine, Cambridge

Re: Senior Physiotherapist

Kia ora Megan,

I'd like to apply for the Senior Physiotherapist role at Waipā Sport and Spine. I have seven years in hospital and private practice, and at Kirikiriroa Physio and Sports in Hamilton I see around 45 patients a week with spinal, shoulder, knee and sports injuries, most of them on ACC claims.

A full book only works if people keep doing their exercises once they walk out the door. I built our home exercise programmes into a simple app routine, and the share of patients completing their full treatment plan rose from about half to two in three. I also set up a weekly post-operative knee class with a local orthopaedic surgeon's patients, which now runs at eight to ten people a session. Before private practice I spent three years rotating through Te Awa Hospital, where I mobilised patients on the first day after hip and knee replacements.

A senior role appeals to me because supporting newer physios has become one of the best parts of my week. I supervise two new graduate physiotherapists, with weekly case reviews and joint sessions each month, and I'd like to make that a bigger part of my work alongside my own caseload.

I'm registered with the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand with a current annual practising certificate. I'm trained in acupuncture and dry needling, have studied post-graduate papers in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and hold a full driver's licence. I'd welcome the chance to talk with you about the role.

Ngā mihi,

Liam Brennan

  1. 1Opens with the job and the caseloadIt names the role, then gives the two things a clinic owner checks first: years of experience and a real weekly patient number, with the ACC share that private practice depends on.
  2. 2Shows results, not treatmentsInstead of listing techniques, it shows more patients finishing their plans and a class that people keep coming to. The hospital years back up the post-operative work in one line.
  3. 3Explains why a senior roleThe reason for stepping up is tied to supervision he already does, so it reads as the next step rather than a wish for a title.
  4. 4Closes with registration and extrasRegistration and a current APC come first because a clinic can't book patients without them. Dry needling and post-graduate study follow as a bonus, then a short close.

Opening lines

Other ways to open.

The first line decides whether the rest gets read. Each of these names the job and leads with proof. Swap in your own facts.

  • “I'd like to apply for your Senior Physiotherapist role, bringing seven years in hospital and private practice and a caseload of around 45 patients a week.”
  • “I'm applying for the Physiotherapist position at your clinic, where I can use my experience getting more patients to finish their full treatment plan.”
  • “Having set up a weekly post-operative knee class that now runs at eight to ten people a session, I'm applying for your musculoskeletal physiotherapist role.”
  • “I supervise two new graduate physiotherapists with weekly case reviews, and I'm applying for your Clinical Lead role to make that a bigger part of my job.”
  • “After three years rotating through orthopaedics, general medicine, respiratory and older people's health, I'm applying for your Physiotherapist role on the orthopaedic ward.”

Common mistakes

What gets physiotherapist letters skipped.

  • Listing treatments like manual therapy, taping and exercise.

Say who you treat, how many a week and what changed for them, like more patients finishing their plan.

  • Leaving out ACC.

Private clinics rely on ACC work. Say what share of your caseload is on ACC claims and that you keep the paperwork moving.

  • Describing every hospital rotation in detail.

Give your rotations one sentence and pick the part that matches the job, like post-operative orthopaedics for a sports and spine clinic.

  • Forgetting to confirm your APC.

Add one line naming the Physiotherapy Board and saying your annual practising certificate is current.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

Do physiotherapists need a cover letter in New Zealand?

Many clinics and hospitals ask for one. A short letter lets you show your caseload and results in a way a CV list of skills can't.

How do I move from a hospital physio job to private practice?

Lead with any musculoskeletal and orthopaedic work, show you can handle a steady weekly caseload, and say you're ready to learn ACC processes if you haven't used them yet.

Should I mention post-graduate study in my letter?

Yes, briefly, if it relates to the role. One line naming the papers or training is enough, and the detail can stay on your CV.
