Kia ora Hēmi,

I'm applying for the Senior Automotive Technician role in your workshop. I'm a qualified automotive technician and NZTA-appointed WoF inspector with nine years in light vehicle workshops, including my four-year apprenticeship, all at Te Awa Motors in Rotorua.

A senior technician gets the cars where nobody else can find the fault. I diagnose electrical and intermittent faults with scan tools and wiring diagrams, which cuts down on parts swapped on guesswork, and I service and repair hybrids following the maker's high-voltage isolation steps every time. Week to week I complete 25 to 30 jobs across servicing, repairs and diagnostics on Japanese and European cars, and I carry out around 40 warrant of fitness inspections a month.

I also coach a second-year apprentice, checking their work before each car goes back to the customer. Having trained and qualified in one workshop, I'd like to take the next step somewhere with a busy diagnostic load, where passing on what I know is part of the job.

I hold the New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering (Level 4) and a full driver's licence, and I have my own tools. I'd be glad to come in for a chat or a trial day in the workshop.

Common mistakes

What gets automotive technician letters skipped.

  • Listing every make and job you've ever worked on.

    Pick the work the ad asks for, such as diagnostics, hybrids or WoF inspections, and give one number for how much of it you do.

  • Leaving out your WoF appointment or qualification level.

    Say you're qualified, name the certificate and say if you're an NZTA-appointed inspector. Service managers screen on these first.

  • Calling yourself thorough without showing it.

    Point to proof, like following high-voltage isolation steps every time or checking an apprentice's work before the car goes back.
