I'd like to apply for the Orchard Supervisor role at Paengaroa Kiwifruit Growers. I've worked five years in Te Puke kiwifruit orchards, through picking, thinning, winter pruning and pollination, and at Kaimai Kiwifruit Orchards I lead a picking gang of 12 at harvest, filling up to 70 bins a day across three orchard blocks.

As team leader I'm responsible for both pace and quality. I check picked fruit for damage and size before each bin leaves the row, which brought packhouse rejects down by about a third over one season. I train every new picker on bag handling, fruit care and orchard safety on their first day, run the morning safety briefing and report hazards like damaged posts and wet ground. I also plan the day's rows with the orchard manager so bins keep moving to the packhouse on time.

Before that I spent three years with Rangiuru Orchard Services, picking with the top five on the crew, winter-pruning gold and green canopies to the manager's cane count and driving the tractor and bin trailer. In 2023 I completed the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Fruit Production) (Level 3), and I'm ready to look after an orchard's work through the whole year, not just a gang at harvest.

I have a full driver's licence and I'm available for the full season, including weekends at harvest. I'd be glad to meet you on the orchard whenever suits.

Common mistakes

What gets orchard worker letters skipped.

  • Only talking about picking.

    Include pruning, thinning, pollination and machinery. Orchards need people who can work through the whole year.

  • Leaving out safety.

    Mention safety briefings, hazard reporting and training new pickers. Orchard managers are responsible for everyone on the block.

  • Giving no numbers.

    Say how many bins a day, how big your gang is or how you improved fruit quality. It shows what you can deliver.
