About the job
Business knowledge comes to life when learners can use it to understand organisations, solve problems and make informed decisions.
At Skills Institute, part of Skills Group, you’ll bring your specialist expertise into our Bachelor of Applied Business Management. Through engaging teaching and practical industry connections, you’ll help learners understand how people, finance, marketing and market dynamics influence organisational success.
You’ll bring depth in at least one core area, people and organisational behaviour/HR, finance and accounting, marketing and customers, or markets and economies, with the ability to teach across other areas. Working alongside colleagues with complementary expertise, you’ll connect theory with business practice across Aotearoa’s commercial, iwi enterprise, social enterprise and public sectors.
Alongside teaching, you’ll maintain active research or scholarly activity that informs the curriculum and supports learners’ development.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Deliver engaging business management learning through workshops, online teaching and guided independent study.
- Connect business concepts with practical organisational challenges, helping learners develop critical thinking and professional judgement.
- Design assessments, provide constructive feedback and contribute to moderation, programme review and curriculum development.
- Supervise and assess industry placements and deliver applied activities that connect learning with workplace practice.
- Maintain active research or scholarly activity that strengthens teaching, assessment and subject knowledge.
- Create an inclusive, culturally responsive learning environment, supporting learner wellbeing, academic integrity and responsible use of AI.
What You’ll Bring
Essential requirements:
- A completed Master’s degree at NZQCF Level 9 or higher in business management, commerce, business administration or an allied field, aligned with the subjects you’ll teach.
- Specialist expertise in at least one of the programme’s core business areas, with the ability to teach across others.
- Demonstrated current engagement in business-related research or scholarly activity, evidenced by research outputs, active projects or research supervision.
- Relevant professional experience in areas such as HR, finance and accounting, marketing, or business analysis and strategy.
- A tertiary teaching qualification, or willingness to obtain one and the capability to teach, assess and supervise consistently with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, engaging respectfully with mātauranga Māori and tikanga and supporting equitable Māori and Pasifika learner outcomes.
- Clear communication, attentive listening and an empathetic, proactive approach to learning, with the ability to think independently and work collaboratively.
Desirable: A relevant doctorate or current doctoral study; experience in degree-level assessment design, moderation and programme review; supervision of research, placements or industry projects; and experience using AI critically and responsibly in teaching or professional practice.
We support new staff to strengthen their Te Tiriti and culturally responsive teaching capability through induction and ongoing professional development.
Some evening, weekend or block teaching may be required, along with travel for placement supervision and industry engagement.
