Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

  • Learning supportSay which needs you've supported, like dyslexia, autism, ADHD or physical disability.
  • ORSThe Ongoing Resourcing Scheme funds support for students with the highest needs. Say if you've worked with ORS-funded students.
  • Individual education planShow you follow an IEP and help update it with what you see day to day.
  • Structured literacyMany schools now use it. Name the approach your school uses and the groups you've run.
  • English language learnersIf you've supported new learners of English, say so, and list the languages you speak.
  • Behaviour supportPrincipals want calm, consistent adults. Give an example of a plan you followed and what changed.

Common mistakes

What costs teacher aide CVs interviews.

  • Describing the school day, like "helped in class and on the playground".

    Say which students, what support, and what progress they made, such as reading levels or attendance.

  • Leaving out your safety check.

    Say in your details that you've had a children's worker safety check. Schools must do one before you start.

  • Not mentioning languages or cultural knowledge.

    Schools with English language learners value staff who share a language with families. Put it in your skills.

  • Naming students or giving details that could identify them.

    Keep examples general. Describe the need and the progress, never the child.

What changes across the Tasman.

New Zealand

Under the Children's Act 2014, schools must safety check children's workers, meaning staff whose work gives them regular contact with students without a parent present, and the check includes a Police vet. Expect one as a teacher aide.

Australia

In Australia, people in child-related work need a Working with Children Check, and each state and territory runs its own screening, so check the one where you'll work. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

Do I need a qualification to be a teacher aide?

Not always. Many schools hire for experience and attitude, and support you to study. The New Zealand Certificate in Education Support (Level 4) is a common choice.

Should I include volunteering at school or looking after children?

Yes, if you have little paid experience. Say what you did, with which age group and for how long.

How long should a teacher aide CV be?

One to two pages. Put the students you've supported and your safety check on the first page.
