Brush Hands / Trainee Painters

Cake Commercial Services is a premier subcontractor specializing in Passive Fire, Intumescent, and Protective Coatings. We are known for our operational excellence and commercial discipline, delivering exceptional outcomes on some of New Zealand’s most challenging construction and infrastructure projects.

We are looking for motivated trainee painters / brush hands to join our team for a new project starting in January 2027. These are great opportunities for people who want to learn practical skills and build a career in protective coatings.

You’ll work on steel and concrete surfaces, preparing and applying specialist coatings using brush and roller methods. You’ll receive training and work alongside experienced people on site.

This job is Dunedin-based.

What you’ll be doing

• Preparing surfaces to specification using hand and power tools

• Water blasting steel, concrete and other surfaces

• Mixing and applying coatings, including intumescent coatings, zinc primers, high-build epoxy and polyurethanes

• Assisting with airless spray equipment when required

• Working safely at heights and around access equipment

• Following site health and safety, quality and environmental procedures

• Completing site documentation and training as required

• Driving company vehicles when required

What we’re looking for

• A positive attitude and willingness to learn

• Practical ability and confidence using hand and power tools

• An interest in painting, coatings or construction work

• Care and attention to quality, safety and following instructions

• A full, clean driver’s licence is required when driving company vehicles

Previous protective-coatings experience is an advantage, but these roles are suitable for trainees keen to learn.
