Skills and keywords

What business analyst job ads look for.

Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

  • RequirementsThe core of the job. Say how you gather them (workshops, interviews, observation) as well as how you write them.
  • User storiesAgile teams screen for them. Mention acceptance criteria too.
  • Process mappingName the notation or tool, such as BPMN or Visio, and what the map led to.
  • Stakeholder managementShow the range of people you work between: staff, managers, vendors and developers.
  • AgileSay which way of working you know, such as Scrum or Kanban, and your part in it.
  • UATUser acceptance testing shows you see a change through, not just specify it.
  • Business caseA sign you can weigh costs and benefits, and a step towards senior roles.

Bullet points

9 strong lines to borrow from.

Each says what was done, how, and what came of it. Swap in your own facts: a line is only strong if it's true.

  7. 7Wrote the business case for automating loan document checks, approved with a payback of under two years
  8. 8Used SQL to size a problem before the project started, showing 1 in 5 applications stalled at the same step
  9. 9Ran a requirements workshop that brought three teams to agreement on a single customer onboarding process

Common mistakes

What costs business analyst CVs interviews.

  • Listing BA techniques without projects.

Give each project a line on the problem, what you did and the result. The techniques show up in how you did it.

  • Stopping at the requirements.

Say what happened after go-live. The result of the change is what hiring managers want to see.

  • Writing your CV in jargon.

A BA is hired to make things clear. Plain language on your CV is part of the evidence.

New Zealand and Australia

What changes across the Tasman.

New Zealand

Wellington has many business analyst roles in government and financial services, and ads often ask for Agile experience alongside traditional analysis. Name the industries you know, since domain knowledge often decides a shortlist.

New Zealand CV format

Australia

Australian business analyst ads look for the same skills, and many government roles need Australian citizenship or a security clearance, so check the ad. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

Is an IIBA certification worth listing?

Yes. The ECBA, CCBA or CBAP tells an employer you know the standard practices. Put it with your education and give the year.

How do I show project work when I was one of many?

Say what you owned. "Led the requirements for claims" is clearer than "part of the team that delivered a new system".

Can I move into business analysis from another role?

Yes. Many BAs come from operations, customer service or testing. Lead with the analysis you've already done, such as fixing a process, writing a procedure or gathering needs for a new tool.
