What data analyst job ads look for.

Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

Common mistakes

What costs data analyst CVs interviews.

  • Describing the dashboard, not what it changed.

    Say who used the work and what they decided or saved because of it.

  • Listing tools with no sense of depth.

    Show each main tool in use in your experience: the SQL you wrote, the model you built, the report you automated.

  • Numbers without context.

    "Analysed 2 million rows" says little. Give the question you were answering and the result.

  • Leaving out data quality and privacy.

    A line on validation checks or handling personal data carefully reassures employers, especially in health, finance and government.

Australian data analyst ads ask for much the same SQL, Power BI and Python skills, and some government roles need a security clearance or citizenship. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

Should I include a portfolio?

Yes, if you can. A GitHub or a published Power BI report with made-up or public data shows how you work. Never share an employer's data.

Do I need a degree in statistics?

Not always. Many analysts come from commerce, science or economics. Show the analysis skills the ad asks for, and list any certifications, such as the Power BI Data Analyst Associate.

How technical should my CV be?

Technical enough to pass the tool screen, plain enough for a hiring manager. Name the tools in your skills, and write the bullets in terms of the business result.
