In every role, McCainers are ambitious, curious, and passionate about creating exceptional work experiences - together. With a customer-first mindset, we make doing business with McCain easy.

About the role.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced people leader to join our Timaru manufacturing team as a Shift Manager.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll lead a team of around 15 people and play an important part in keeping your shift running safely, effectively and efficiently. You’ll be the go-to person for your team, providing clear direction, solving problems and creating an environment where people feel supported, trusted and accountable.

Working across a 12-hour rotating shift roster (2 days: 7am-7pm, 2 nights: 7pm-7am, followed by 4 days off), you’ll balance leading your team with operational priorities, scheduled meetings, reporting and shift administration. It’s a varied, fast-moving role that will suit someone who enjoys being close to the action, can confidently manage competing priorities and knows how to keep people focused when things change.

If you’re a strong communicator, an organised problem-solver and a leader who enjoys bringing out the best in people, this could be a fantastic next step.

What you’ll be doing.

  • Lead, support and develop a team of around 15 people, providing clear direction, coaching and day-to-day leadership
  • Drive shift performance while maintaining a strong focus on safety, food quality and operational standards
  • Build a positive team environment based on trust, accountability and open communication
  • Be a visible and approachable leader, balancing the needs of your team with your own operational responsibilities
  • Communicate confidently with your team and contribute effectively in meetings with other leaders
  • Coordinate people and resources to keep operations running smoothly
  • Manage competing priorities, solve problems and make sound decisions as situations change
  • Lead constructive conversations around performance, safety and expectations when required
  • Complete regular reporting, timesheets and other shift administration
  • Identify and support opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Work closely with other Shift Managers and site leaders to support smooth handovers and consistent performance

What you’ll need to be successful.

  • Proven people leadership experience, with the ability to build trust, accountability and engagement within a team
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, with food manufacturing experience highly regarded
  • Strong, clear and confident communication skills, including the ability to speak in front of a team and contribute effectively in meetings
  • Confidence navigating challenging situations and having clear, constructive conversations when needed
  • Strong organisational, prioritisation and multitasking skills
  • Practical problem-solving skills and confidence making decisions in a busy operational environment
  • A hands-on, solutions-focused approach, with the ability to balance your own responsibilities while remaining available to your team
  • A strong commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement
  • Experience with SAP, WMS and payroll or time-and-attendance systems such as Dimensions would be highly regarded
  • Strong general computer skills and confidence using digital tools and AI as part of your day-to-day work
