We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations — from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.
Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.
About the Role
Help shape a significant change in how community-based maternity ultrasound services are commissioned and delivered. As Maternity Clinical Change Lead – Maternity Ultrasound Transition project, you will provide clinical leadership for the transition from the Primary Maternity Services Notice to the Community Referred Radiology programme. This 12-month fixed-term, full-time role (1.0 FTE) offers the opportunity to put maternity expertise at the centre of a nationally consistent, sustainable service model, with clinical safety, practical implementation and equitable access guiding your work.
Working closely with the Project Manager, you will bring clinicians, providers and programme partners together to turn service design into practical change. You will help shape referral pathways, access criteria and provider guidance; lead maternity-sector engagement, communications and readiness activities; and advise on clinical risks and implementation decisions. Your contribution will help providers and Lead Maternity Carers understand what is changing and prepare for new ways of working, while maintaining continuity of access for service users.
About the Team and Location
You will join Planning, Funding and Outcomes within Living Well, reporting to the Group Manager – Planned and Unplanned Care. As the programme's primary maternity subject matter expert, you will work in close partnership with the Project Manager, the Community Referred Radiology programme, Kahu Taurima, regional teams, maternity and radiology providers, professional bodies and consumer representatives. This is an opportunity to connect clinical insight with commissioning and implementation, building shared understanding across a wide range of partners. The role's base location is to be confirmed.
About you
You are an experienced maternity clinician who can connect clinical insight with practical service change. You bring a relevant clinical qualification, preferably in midwifery, a current annual practising certificate and significant maternity services experience. Comfortable working across clinical, operational, commissioning and policy settings, you build trusted relationships and translate complex requirements into clear actions. You will bring:
- Demonstrated experience leading clinical change, service redesign or implementation in a complex health environment.
- Strong knowledge of New Zealand maternity services, funding and commissioning arrangements, and the role of Lead Maternity Carers.
- The ability to engage clinicians, providers, professional bodies and senior leaders, building confidence and alignment through change.
- Sound understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement and risk management.
- Experience delivering operational readiness, communications and engagement activities that support adoption of new processes.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, including the ability to prepare clear briefings, governance papers and implementation recommendations.
- The judgement to identify emerging issues, manage competing priorities and turn strategic direction into practical implementation.
- A strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and health equity, with experience working collaboratively with Māori, Pacific and other priority populations to improve service access and outcomes.
