Store Manager CV example

Area managers hiring a store manager look for three things: sales you've grown, a team you've built, and a store that runs properly when you're not there. This store manager CV example puts numbers on all three.

Skills and keywords

What store manager job ads look for.

Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

  • Sales growthGive a percentage over a set time. It's the first number an area manager looks for.
  • KPIsName the ones you're measured on, such as conversion, average sale or customer score, and how you moved them.
  • ShrinkageLoss as a share of sales shows you run a tight store. Say what you changed to bring it down.
  • Wage budgetRostering to budget is a core part of the job. Show you hit it.
  • Team leadershipSay how many people you lead and what became of the people you trained.
  • StocktakeA low variance is a quiet proof of good stock control.
  • Health and safetyStore managers are responsible for it. Mention incident reporting or hazard checks you run.

Common mistakes

What costs store manager CVs interviews.

  • Describing the job instead of your results.

Every store manager does rosters and banking. Show what changed because you did them: sales, shrinkage, staff turnover.

  • No size for the store.

Give the annual turnover and the size of the team. It tells a hiring manager what level you're at.

  • Leaving out the people you developed.

Staff you've trained and promoted show you can build a team, which is most of the job.

  • A long list of every retail job since school.

Keep the last ten years or so in full. Older jobs can go in a single line.

New Zealand

If you're applying to a store that sells alcohol, such as a supermarket or bottle store, list a manager's certificate if you hold one: every New Zealand business with an off-licence must appoint a manager.

Australia

Australian retail ads often list the sales and team size they expect, so match your numbers to theirs in your summary. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

How long should a store manager CV be?

Two pages is right for most store managers. Keep the most recent roles in full and cut older ones down.

Can I share sales figures from my current store?

Share percentages and ranges rather than exact takings if you're unsure. Growth and shrinkage as a percentage tell the story without giving away confidential numbers.

Do I need a retail qualification?

Not always. Experience counts most, but a Level 4 retail certificate shows you've learned the management side properly.
