About the job

Team Leader Fitness | West Wave Pools and Leisure Centre

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

West Wave is one of the biggest and busiest leisure centres in New Zealand. We are currently looking for a Fitness Team Leader to play a key part in making the experience of our customers fun, safe, and enjoyable.

This role isn't about hanging around the step machines looking cool; this is about leading a team of Fitness Consultants and Fitness Team Members who love to engage with our customers, talk to them, and to understand their needs to encourage them to enjoy keeping fit & healthy regularly.

You'll play a key role in setting the tone for service, lifting consistency, and ensuring the function operates with professionalism, responsiveness, and a strong customer focus. This includes day-to-day leadership of team members, performance management, training, development, and leave oversight for staff based primarily at the centre.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Overseeing all fitness floor operations, driving service improvements, supporting member retention, and leading the development of new and existing fitness programmes within the centre.
  • Collaborating with other stakeholders to proactively identify, and, where appropriate, implement ways to improve customer experience and grow participation.
  • Uplifting team performance, development, and accountability by making sure your team members are highly engaged, appropriately qualified, and skilled with appropriate development plans in place.
  • Ensuring hazard management plans, policies, processes, and training are effectively managed and there is ongoing compliance within the team.
  • Contributing to centre-wide leadership, planning, and problem-solving.

This is a full-time, on-site, permanent opportunity, working 40 hours per week. The centre operates across 7 days, 5:30am to 9:30pm most days, and this role may be required to work across all days and hours of operation.

Flexibility to work a variety of shifts and hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public/school holidays is essential for this role.

He kōrero mōu: About you

This role will suit a capable people leader with excellent judgement and the confidence to lead a front-facing team in a busy operational environment.

You'll have experience managing a team within the health and fitness environment and a proven track record in developing & maintaining relationships with a diverse range of internal and external customers. You'l also have experience leading group fitness classes, e.g., BoxFit and Aqua classes.

You will bring:

  • Proven people leadership experience, including coaching, performance management, and building team capability
  • Exceptional customer service skills and experience managing customer concerns, complaints, or challenging situations, ideally in a high-volume, public-facing environment
  • The ability to set clear expectations and lift consistency, accountability, and service standards
  • Sound operational judgement and the ability to respond calmly and effectively in a fast-paced, complex environment
  • Confidence working as part of a wider centre leadership team, positively contributing beyond your own function
  • Strong relationship management skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Initiative to identify issues, improve ways of working, and strengthen the overall customer experience

You will also demonstrate:

  • A practical and steady leadership style
  • Excellent communication, planning, organisation, and prioritisation skills
  • A strong sense of ownership and follow-through
  • A genuine commitment to leading people well and delivering quality service for a diverse range of people from the community

You must hold an NZ-recognised qualification in Fitness, Sport or Recreation, current REPs registration, and a current First Aid certificate (you must be willing to obtain one if not currently held).
