Mō te tūnga | About the roles The New Zealand Financial Intelligence Unit (NZFIU) sits at the centre of New Zealand’s response to money laundering, terrorism financing, proliferation financing, organised crime and serious financial offending. We are recruiting two Senior Intelligence Analysts on a fixed term basis to provide immediate support to key teams within the unit. Both roles will contribute to intelligence-led decision making, prevention and disruption, and stronger outcomes across New Zealand’s anti-money laundering and countering financing of terrorism system. The successful candidates may be assigned to the following priority areas, based on organisational need and their strengths and experience:

  • Strategic intelligence and national risk - developing strategic intelligence products and supporting thematic National Risk Assessments, national reform priorities, FATF/APG assessment preparation and the evidence base for national risk and policy decisions.
  • Partnership intelligence and financial crime prevention - working with public and private sector partners to develop typologies, threat assessments, alerts, advisories and intelligence-led interventions that strengthen prevention and disruption outcomes.

These are opportunities for experienced analysts who can turn complex information into clear judgements, practical advice and coordinated action. The roles require strong analytical discipline, high-quality communication and confidence working across organisational boundaries. Key deliverables by June 2027:

  • Support priority thematic National Risk Assessments and other national intelligence or evidence requirements.
  • Develop financial crime typologies, threat assessments, alerts, advisories and guidance for government, industry and reporting entities.
  • Translate complex intelligence findings into clear, actionable recommendations for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Contribute intelligence and evidence to National AML/CFT Strategy implementation, reform activity and FATF/APG assessment preparation.

He aha taau e kawe mai | What you’ll bring We're looking for someone who combines strong business analysis skills with data literacy and a genuine interest in intelligence-led decision making. Ideally you will have:

  • Demonstrated experience producing strategic intelligence, research, policy or analytical products.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience conducting complex research or assessment work.
  • Proven ability to engage effectively with stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • A genuine interest in intelligence-led prevention, disruption and system improvement.

Security Clearance Requirements To be eligible for this role, you may be asked to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET national security clearance. The minimum criteria for this level of national security clearance is: NZ Citizen who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or:

  • A Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or
  • A citizen of or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, or United States of America, and has a background that can be verified by the NZSIS.

Utu ā-tau | Salary This position is covered by a collective agreement, and salary will commence at $120,224 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
