About the job

Help shape fire safety and compliance across one of New Zealand’s most complex operational environments.

At Auckland Airport, fire safety is more than a regulatory requirement. It is an important part of keeping our people, passengers, partners and operations safe and resilient.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Compliance Officer – Fire to join our Risk, Compliance & Assurance team and lead the delivery and ongoing development of our fire compliance programme.

Reporting to the Senior Manager – Compliance Programmes & Frameworks, this is a hands-on specialist role with significant opportunity to influence how fire compliance requirements are understood, implemented and assured across the airport.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll work across a diverse airport environment, partnering with operational teams, infrastructure and property specialists, contractors, tenants and external agencies.

In this role, you will:

  • Leading and maintaining Auckland Airport’s fire compliance and assurance programme.
  • Interpreting fire safety regulatory requirements and translating them into practical operational requirements.
  • Managing fire-related compliance monitoring, inspections, audits and statutory reviews.
  • Leading the airport’s trial evacuation programme and supporting the ongoing effectiveness of our fire evacuation schemes.
  • Delivering fire safety training, awareness and guidance across the airport community.
  • Monitoring fire-related incidents, risks, findings and corrective actions through to appropriate closure.
  • Supporting fire-related Building Warrant of Fitness compliance and working alongside building compliance and fire reliability specialists.
  • Monitoring regulatory change and supporting the implementation of new or amended requirements.
  • Maintaining fire compliance reporting and providing visibility of performance and emerging issues.
  • Supporting effective controls for the safe storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Building strong relationships with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), fire engineers, specialist consultants, contractors, airlines, ground handlers and other airport stakeholders.

What you will bring to the role

At Auckland Airport, we are a busy hive of activity, and a lot of what we look for is how you would align with our AKL values All In | Tātou tatou – How we feel, Know How | Kōkiri Tahi – How we think and Let’s Go | Karawhiua – How we act.

Experience working in an airport, infrastructure, property, facilities or similarly complex operational environment would be an advantage, as would knowledge of quality assurance and auditing.

We’re looking for someone who combines strong technical fire compliance knowledge with the ability to build relationships and get things done in a complex operational environment.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • Strong experience in fire safety compliance and regulatory environments.
  • Practical experience with fire evacuation schemes and their associated requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of New Zealand fire safety legislation and building fire compliance requirements.
  • Experience applying building requirements from a fire compliance perspective.
  • Experience in compliance monitoring, assurance, auditing or inspection activities.
  • The ability to understand complex requirements and turn them into practical solutions.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the confidence to work across different levels of an organisation.
  • Clear written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • The ability to influence outcomes where you may not have direct authority.
  • Confidence working with compliance, risk, audit and Microsoft 365 systems.

What will make you successful

This role will suit someone who is technically credible but equally comfortable getting out into the operation and working with people.

You’ll be someone who:

  • Takes a practical and proportionate approach to compliance.
  • Is confident challenging where something isn’t right while remaining constructive and solutions-focused.
  • Can build trusted relationships with operational teams, technical specialists and external stakeholders.
  • Is comfortable working across multiple priorities in a changing environment.
  • Takes ownership of issues and follows them through.
  • Has strong attention to detail without losing sight of the wider operational picture.
  • Is motivated by improving compliance capability, not simply identifying non-compliance.
