About the job

Build your career with a long established Taranaki surveying practice, right here in one of New Zealand’s most desirable regions to live and work.

McKinlay Surveyors has a proud history in Taranaki and an exciting future ahead. Based in New Plymouth and working across the wider region, we are growing and evolving our practice, moving from a traditional partnership model toward an integrated surveyor planner structure.

We are looking for an experienced Licensed Cadastral Surveyor who wants to be part of that next chapter. You will have autonomy, varied and interesting work, a strong local client base and genuine scope to grow with the business over time.

When the working day is done, you have everything Taranaki has to offer right on your doorstep.

Why New Plymouth?

If you are considering a move, New Plymouth offers the kind of balance that can be hard to find elsewhere. A great place to build a career, raise a family and actually enjoy the time you have outside of work.

  • Ditch the traffic
  • Excellent schools, parks and a welcoming community
  • Mount Taranaki, and incredible outdoor activities on your doorstep
  • The Coastal Walkway and surf-friendly beaches
  • A vibrant arts and events scene
  • Great dining and cafés, including plenty along the waterfront

For the right person currently residing in New Zealand, we are pleased to offer relocation support to help you make New Plymouth your new home. Please note that international relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What can we offer you?

  • Competitive salary
  • Vehicle, fuel card and phone
  • Professional subscriptions covered
  • A varied workload across the wider Taranaki region
  • Autonomy and the opportunity to lead your own projects
  • Join an established local practice that is continuing to grow and evolve

We are thinking long term. For the right person, there is genuine scope for future progression, including the possibility of stepping into a senior leadership or ownership role over time.

About McKinlay Surveyors

With roots in Taranaki dating back to 1881, McKinlay Surveyors is Taranaki’s longest established surveying practice, with a reputation built over generations. Our work spans the wider region and our reputation has been built on quality work, sound technical advice and strong relationships.

We are now in an exciting growth phase. The practice is evolving, the work is varied, the standards are high, and we want to build a team that enjoys the work as much as the outcomes.

About The Role

You will manage client and landowner engagement, undertake pre-planning, complete field surveys, carry out post-field calculations, and prepare and lodge Land Transfer plans.

The work spans cadastral, civil, topographical and site set out projects, with plenty of autonomy. You will also:

  • Lead smaller projects end to end, including methodology, compliance and QA
  • Provide technical guidance to graduates
  • Support planning interfaces and subdivision workflows
  • Prepare Landonline datasets and resolve spatial queries
  • Keep work moving when conditions shift, prioritising, troubleshooting and making sound decisions on site
  • Contribute to continuous improvement as the practice evolves

About You

We are looking for a Licensed Cadastral Surveyor who:

  • Holds a current New Zealand Cadastral Licence with 5+ years’ experience
  • Is comfortable and competent with GNSS, robotic total stations (Trimble preferred but not essential), 12D and AutoCAD, with strong general computer literacy
  • Is confident working with the Cadastral Survey Rules 2021
  • Makes sound decisions on site, solves problems independently and knows when to ask for support
  • Has a positive attitude to the profession, turns up prepared and takes pride in doing the job well
  • Is comfortable working independently in the field while also fitting into a small, pragmatic office team
  • Brings a good sense of humour and an open communication style
  • Holds a full New Zealand driver licence

If you are looking for more than just your next surveying role and like the idea of building your future with an established Taranaki practice, we would love to hear from you.
