Te Tūranga - The Role

As Lead Design Engineer - Team Lead Platforms, you will lead and support a team of engineers, creating an environment where people can do their best work and continue to grow their skills and careers. Working closely with Technical Leads, Project Leads, and other stakeholders, you'll balance delivery priorities, manage team capacity, and help ensure engineering outcomes are delivered to a high standard.

While leadership is a key focus, you'll also maintain technical involvement, providing guidance, reviewing engineering work, and contributing to the development of complex embedded software solutions.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers, fostering engagement, performance, and professional growth.
  • Plan and coordinate team resources across projects and priorities to achieve delivery objectives.
  • Support recruitment, capability development, succession planning, and team wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with Technical Leads, Project Leads, and stakeholders to manage risks, remove delivery constraints, and maintain project momentum.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance engineering quality, consistency, and delivery effectiveness.
  • Act as Project Coordinator on assigned projects, overseeing planning, coordination, reporting, and risk management.
  • Provide technical leadership through engineering reviews, mentoring, and hands-on contribution to product development activities.
  • Champion innovation by supporting the evaluation and adoption of new tools, technologies, and engineering practices.

You are a people-focused engineering leader who enjoys helping teams succeed while remaining connected to the technical challenges and opportunities within a product development environment. You are collaborative, pragmatic, and capable of balancing competing priorities while maintaining a strong focus on delivery and quality.

To be successful in this role, you'll bring:

  • Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams within a product development or technology environment.
  • Strong ability to plan and allocate technical resources across multiple projects, priorities, and workstreams.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and building capability within engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated success solving complex engineering challenges and providing sound technical guidance.
  • Strong stakeholder management and the ability to influence across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Hands-on experience delivering embedded software solutions for complex products.
  • A tertiary qualification in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
