Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

Te Wānanga Toi Tangata Division of Education invites applications for an outstanding academic leader to take up the role of Associate Dean Māori Education alongside a continuing substantive appointment as either Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor in Māori Education.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Māori education within the Division and across the University. The Associate Dean Māori Education will provide strategic leadership for Māori education initiatives, support the advancement of kaupapa Māori and mātauranga Māori, and contribute to the development, implementation and review of programmes, policies and practices that enhance educational outcomes for Māori learners and communities.

A significant part of the role involves building strong relationships with academic leaders, staff, iwi, schools, community organisations and external agencies to strengthen partnerships and advance the University’s strategic priorities in Māori education.

In the substantive academic role, you will contribute to high-quality teaching, research and postgraduate supervision, maintain and develop an active programme of scholarship and research, and undertake professional, community and iwi service activities relevant to Māori education.

Candidates appointed at Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor level will be expected to demonstrate academic leadership through mentoring and supporting colleagues, contributing to programme development, and enhancing research and teaching capability within the School.

The substantive appointment will be continuing at either Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor level. The Associate Dean Māori Education appointment will be for a fixed term of three (3) years, with the possibility of extension for a further three years by mutual agreement.

The level of appointment will be determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. The salary range is $113,428 to $148,799 per year for a Senior Lecturer, or $150,661 to $166,176 per year for an Associate Professor. This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week), based at our Hamilton Campus.

You will hold a PhD in a relevant field and have demonstrated expertise in Māori education, including knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, te reo Māori, ngā tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori.

You will bring a strong record of teaching, research and service, together with the ability to provide strategic and collegial leadership. Experience in Māori medium and/or kaupapa Māori education, teacher education, curriculum development, postgraduate supervision, and engagement with iwi and community partners will be highly valued.

For appointment at Associate Professor level, you will have an established national and preferably international research profile, evidence of successful postgraduate supervision, and a strong record of academic leadership and mentorship.
