Skills and keywords

What it support technician job ads look for.

Use the ad's own words where they're true of you. An ATS, and a recruiter skimming, both look for them.

  • Microsoft 365Most New Zealand offices run it. Say what you administer: users, Exchange, Teams or SharePoint.
  • IntuneDevice management is replacing hands-on builds, and ads increasingly ask for it by name.
  • Active DirectoryName Entra ID as well if you've worked with the cloud version.
  • Service deskSay which line you worked on, and the ticketing tool, since that's what you'll be using day one.
  • SLAResponse and resolution targets are how support is measured. Show you meet them.
  • ITILLarger employers and managed service providers often list ITIL 4 Foundation as a plus.
  • NetworkingEven a support role hits DHCP, DNS and Wi-Fi problems. Name what you can troubleshoot.

Common mistakes

What costs it support technician CVs interviews.

  • A long list of every product you've ever seen.

Group your skills by area (devices, Microsoft 365, networking, tools) and keep to what you've actually supported.

  • "Provided IT support to staff."

Give the scale and the pace: how many users, how many tickets a day, and your resolution rate or SLA.

  • Only showing reactive fixes.

Add a project or improvement, such as a device rollout, a knowledge base or a fix that stopped a repeat fault. It shows you're ready for second line.

  • Leaving out the soft side of support.

Employers hire technicians who can calm a stressed user. A bullet on training or plain-language help makes the point.

New Zealand and Australia

What changes across the Tasman.

New Zealand

Many New Zealand support roles, especially at managed service providers, involve driving to client sites, so say if you hold a full licence. Certifications help but aren't required, and hands-on experience usually counts for more.

Australia

Australian IT support ads ask for much the same Microsoft stack, and some government roles need a security clearance or citizenship, so read the ad closely. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Email support@smartcvs.ai and a person will reply.

Do I need certifications to get an IT support job?

Not always. They help most when you're starting out or moving to a larger employer. List any you hold with the year, and put the ones you're studying for as "in progress".

How do I move from first line to second line support?

Show the harder problems you already solve, such as device management, networking or server tasks, and any projects you've helped with. Those bullets matter more than your ticket count.

Should I include a home lab?

Yes, if you have little work experience. A line on what you built, such as a test domain or a home network, shows skills the ad asks for.
