Common mistakes

What costs courier driver CVs interviews.

  • Not saying what licence you hold.

    Put "Full Class 1" in your details, and add any heavier class or endorsement you hold.

  • "Delivered parcels" with no numbers.

    Give your drops a day, your on-time rate and the area you covered.

  • Forgetting the customer side.

    Couriers are the face of the company at the door. A line on regular customers or complaints handled shows you're good with people.

  • Leaving gaps in your availability.

    Depots plan around peak season and Saturdays. Say when you can work.

What changes across the Tasman.

New Zealand

In New Zealand a full Class 1 licence lets you drive any vehicle up to 6000 kg gross laden weight, which covers most courier vans. Bigger trucks need a Class 2 or higher.

Australia

In Australia a car (C) licence covers vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass, and licence classes are the same in every state and territory. Australian employers usually say resume rather than CV, and expect about two pages.

Should I list the vans I've driven?

Only if the ad asks for a particular size. The licence class, the kind of run and your drops a day matter more.

How do I show owner-driver work?

List it like a job, with the courier company you contracted to, the run and the dates. Say you ran your own vehicle, since it shows you can manage costs and time.

Does a demerit point or old fine rule me out?

Not always. Don't put it on your CV, but be honest if an employer asks, as they may check your driving history.
