About the job

Help Shape Secure, Scalable Open Banking Capabilities At ASB.

At ASB, we're all about helping our customers get "One Step Ahead" by giving them the tools they need to manage their lives and plan for their future. Our technology underpins the New Zealand economy and plays an important part in the everyday lives of our customers.

About The Role

We are looking for an experienced Technical Consultant (Lead Engineer) to provide technical leadership across our Domestic Payments engineering capability.

This is a senior, hands-on technical leadership role focused on the design, delivery and ongoing evolution of ASB's Open Banking and external API capabilities. You will lead the detailed design and implementation of new integrations into our external API platform, working with squads, stakeholders, third parties and customers to translate complex requirements into practical, secure technical solutions.

The role also requires strong Microsoft Azure knowledge. You will help ensure our solutions are scalable, reliable, secure and aligned with ASB's broader technology architecture and engineering standards. As a Lead Engineer, you will set technical direction, guide delivery through to production and mentor engineers across the squad and wider platform.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the solution and detailed design of Open Banking, external API and integration capabilities.
  • Drive the implementation of new integrations into ASB's external API platform.
  • Refine business requirements with stakeholders and translate them into clear technical designs and delivery plans.
  • Provide technical leadership across Open Banking, Financial-grade APIs, identity, security and integration architecture.
  • Design secure authentication and authorisation solutions using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, digital certificates and mutual TLS.
  • Guide the use of API gateways, access policies and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Apply strong Azure knowledge to the design of scalable, reliable and secure cloud solutions, including Azure Functions, Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Service Bus.
  • Lead design governance and ensure solutions meet appropriate standards for scalability, reliability, performance, robustness and security.
  • Collaborate with Information Security, Enterprise Architecture and other engineering teams to align security and integration patterns.
  • Break down complex workstreams into practical technical components and delivery steps.
  • Guide software engineering practices across C# and .NET-based services.
  • Support delivery through to production, including control, risk, operational and security requirements.
  • Represent engineering in third-party and customer meetings, technical workshops and Open Banking working groups.
  • Mentor engineers, encourage knowledge sharing and influence technical direction beyond the immediate squad.

About You

You are an experienced technical leader who can move comfortably between architecture, detailed design and delivery. You are pragmatic, technically credible and able to explain complex designs clearly to engineers, business stakeholders, security teams and senior leaders.

You take ownership of outcomes and can guide complex programmes of work from early requirements through to production. You balance long-term architectural direction with the practical needs of delivery, controls, operational reliability and customer outcomes.

What You Will Bring

  • Significant software engineering experience, ideally including strong C# and .NET development experience.
  • Experience leading solution architecture and detailed technical design for complex integration platforms.
  • Knowledge of Open Banking and Financial-grade API security standards.
  • Deep understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, authentication and authorisation flows.
  • Experience with API gateways, access policies, digital certificates and mutual TLS.
  • Strong integration architecture and implementation experience.
  • Experience designing and delivering solutions using Microsoft Azure and Azure PaaS services.
  • Knowledge of distributed and event-driven architecture, including scalability, reliability and performance considerations.
  • Experience with containerisation, enterprise networking, CI/CD practices and Git.
  • Strong understanding of security, risk, data protection and production control requirements.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, consultancy, communication and documentation skills.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers and influencing practices across multiple teams.

Ideally, you will also have

  • Experience delivering Open Banking solutions within a bank or regulated financial-services organisation.
  • Hands-on experience implementing Financial-grade API security frameworks.
  • Strong experience with Azure-based integration and API platforms.
  • Knowledge of observability and monitoring tools, including the ELK stack or similar technologies.
  • Experience working within Agile engineering teams.
  • An understanding of payment systems, security expectations and relevant regulatory requirements.

Why join us?

This is an opportunity to lead and influence the continued development of Open Banking at one of New Zealand's largest banks. You will work on high-impact capabilities that connect customers, third parties and banking services securely, while helping shape the engineering practices and architecture that support them.

You will have the opportunity to influence beyond your immediate squad, work with a wide range of technical and business stakeholders, and contribute to the future direction of ASB's Open Banking and Payments technology.
