About the job
At Trade Me, we're about connecting Kiwi to create the life they want. Whether it's the big things like finding a home, a job, a car or growing their business, or the smaller things, like finding that right bedside table or parting ways with some old stuff. At Trade Me our vision is to be the place where Kiwi look first.
As part of our Platforms group, you'll join the Search team, working alongside engineering and product teams to bring product enhancements and new products to life for our customers. Over this 12-month fixed term, you'll draw on backend, search engine and distributed systems experience to keep the systems other teams depend on well run, well understood and simple to operate.
Here is what you can expect from this role:
- Take technical ownership of projects within the Search team, from design and estimation through to planning the work
- Write well-tested code, then release and monitor what you ship in production
- Coach and mentor junior engineers, and peer review code from other developers
- Document as you go, so others can maintain and build on your work
- Spot opportunities to improve our processes, practices, code base and technical design
- Explore how new, innovative technologies can solve current business problems
What you will bring to our team:
- Production experience with Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or another document-driven search engine
- 5+ years in similar development roles, including strong backend experience with .NET (C#)
- Production experience with Google Cloud Pub/Sub, Kafka or similar, plus SQL and cloud with Terraform
- Hands-on experience developing with AI tools, and a natural curiosity to weave them into your everyday work
- You've designed and run production systems with good alerting, and led incident response
- You've run large data migrations or repairs safely, using dry runs, checks and rollback plans
- You've shipped changes to systems other teams rely on, and managed the impact on those teams
- You've worked in legacy code or databases with little documentation, and documented what you learned
- You've mentored engineers and led technical work across teams
- You make design decisions based on cost, capacity and simplicity, with sound judgement on distributed systems: eventual consistency, back-pressure, capacity and cost
- You explain technical concepts clearly, collaborate well, take ideas on board and think critically, adapting your approach to the situation
