We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.

Ko mātou tēnei | This is Us

The Engineering domain helps BNZ modernise our software engineering ecosystem by turning standards, skills, governance, and best practice into products, pathways, partnerships, and automation that help teams deliver value faster and more safely.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Spring Boot Platform Engineer to help build tooling, automation, and shared components that enable BNZ developers to create compliant backend Spring Boot services aligned to our target-state patterns.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We sat down with the Engineering Enablement Manager and they shared the following about the role:

This hybrid role is based in Wellington or Auckland, with two flexible working days per week and anchor days on Tuesday, Thursday, and either Monday or Friday.

This role is known internally as Senior Technical Specialist. We’re looking for a Senior Platform Engineer with strong Spring Boot experience, or a senior software/Spring Boot developer or developer experience engineer with strong platform engineering experience.

What are some of the day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

As a senior team member, you’ll help make Spring Boot development easier for BNZ development teams. You will:

  • Build tooling, automation, shared components, and AI tools that help BNZ developers create compliant backend Spring Boot services aligned to our target-state architecture.
  • Provide common integration patterns, including REST APIs, event-driven services, MQ, and databases.
  • Embed non-functional requirements such as CI/CD, security, scalability, and resilience.
  • Support BNZ’s developer community as they build modern backend services using BNZ’s CI/CD and container platforms.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

  • Improve the day-to-day experience of BNZ’s Spring Boot developer community.
  • Collaborate across engineering teams to design and integrate new features into shared tooling and platforms, including CI/CD, Kubernetes, API gateways, and event platforms.
  • Work at scale on complex technical challenges that shape Spring Boot development across the bank.

What technical skills are required for this role?

Candidates should bring deep Spring Boot and Java expertise, plus practical experience across modern software delivery.

Must have:

  • Strong hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and Java.
  • Building and managing integration services, including microservices.
  • Building and consuming RESTful APIs and using API gateways such as Kong.
  • Working with messaging and event platforms such as MQ or Kafka, and relational databases such as Postgres.
  • Familiarity with SOAP/Webservices for legacy integrations.
  • Strong hands-on experience with developer experience tools and platforms.
  • Using software engineering tools, such as bootstraps, kickstarters, or generators.
  • Experience using CI/CD pipelines and tooling (e.g. Jenkins, Spinnaker, Renovate)
  • Working with Kubernetes and containerised environments such as EKS, AKS, or OpenShift.
  • Experience using GenAI-assisted development tools to build and maintain software.

Desirable:

  • Creating and maintaining development tools, including:
  • Developer experience tools and platforms for software engineers.
  • CI/CD pipelines and tooling for Kubernetes and containerised environments.
  • GenAI-assisted development tools that solve common software engineering problems.
  • Experience with Node, TypeScript, yeoman and Python
  • Cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, including networking and firewall concepts.
  • Security patterns in integration services, including secret management, JWT, and OAuth.
  • Observability, including monitoring, metrics, and alerting tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, or OTel.
  • Strong collaboration skills in Agile and hybrid/remote environments.
  • Significant industry experience (typically 7+ years)
  • Banking or financial services experience.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?

You’ll bring strong insight into the developer experience, understand backend development challenges, and know how to solve them at scale across a large engineering environment.
