About the Role

Te Whatu Ora Taranakis maternity service includes a secondary maternity unit at Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth and a primary birthing unit in Hāwera. Our New Plymouth service is moving into a brandnew, purposebuilt maternity unit opening in 2026, designed to provide a modern, fitforpurpose environment that supports highquality, whānaucentred care. Within the New Plymouth birthing suite there are four primary birthing rooms, each equipped with a birthing pool, and four secondary birthing rooms, two of which also have pools. The unit includes fourteen inpatient rooms, each with an ensuite and partner bed, as well as a dedicated loss room, three patient assessment rooms, an antenatal assessment clinic, and a Womens Assessment Unit. The Hāwera Primary Birthing Unit offers one birthing room with a pool and three postnatal beds, providing a supportive environment for lowrisk birthing and postnatal care.

Te Whatu Ora Taranakis neonatal unit has level 2A accreditation with 6 cots and 2 intensive care cots to provide care for babies from 28 weeks' gestation.

In this role, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, caring for whānau throughout all stages of their maternity journey. You will be able to draw on your knowledge and clinical skills to ensure whānau receive the highest standard of care and feel supported, informed, and safe. You will also have opportunities to demonstrate your commitment to quality improvement, professional standards, and accreditation processes as we continue to strengthen and develop our service.

About you

To be a successful in this role you will:

  • Be registered with Midwifery Council of New Zealand (or be eligible for registration) and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Ideally you will have one-year of postgraduate experience however we encourage New Graduates to apply.
  • Your will bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work rostered rotating shifts in all areas of the maternity service: antenatal, birthing suite, the postnatal ward, and the primary unit
