About this role

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Come and join our Sea Squad at Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand and help keep our waters safe while supporting Aotearoa to meet its international obligations for maritime navigation safety.

As part of the New Zealand Hydrographic Authority, the Sea Squad oversees the collection of hydrographic data, including bathymetry and sea-level information. Most of this data comes from HYPLAN, our long-term national hydrographic survey programme, and is used to update official products such as nautical charts. These products help keep mariners safe in New Zealand waters, support understanding of the marine environment, and contribute to economic growth.

We have an exciting fixed-term junior role in the Sea Squad through to 30 June 2028. You'll help validate earth observation data, including topographic and bathymetric LiDAR, work with other earth observation datasets, and combine them into a single, seamless representation of the land and sea area.

The Squad also supports 3D Coastal Mapping, a major programme that will map up to 40% of Aotearoa New Zealand's coastline over the next three years. This work will show how our coastline is changing and help the country prepare for the impacts of climate change.

You will be comfortable assessing data deliverables against required standards, publishing discoverable and accessible data, communicating with stakeholders, and combining earth observation data from multiple sources. This Wellington-based team works together in the office for most of the time.

This is a Wellington-based role, and the successful candidate will be required to be based in Wellington.
