About the job

About the role

We’re looking for a Graduate Software Engineer to join our product team and help build technology that makes a real difference.

At Generate Zero, we build sustainability intelligence software for major organisations and financial institutions. Our platform brings together large-scale data, analytics and emerging technologies to help customers measure and manage their emissions (including carbon, financed, AI and cloud emissions) and modern slavery risk.

As a Graduate Software Engineer, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and product specialists to help design, build and improve our enterprise SaaS platform. You’ll contribute to real product features from an early stage, developing your technical skills while learning how to turn ideas and user needs into practical software solutions.

You don’t need to know everything already or tick every box below. We’re looking for someone with a solid foundation in software development, a curious mind and a genuine interest in solving problems. You’ll have opportunities to learn new technologies, explore ideas and take on more responsibility as your skills grow.

If you enjoy building things, asking questions and figuring out how to make technology work better, we’d love to hear from you.

What’s special about this role

  • Join a mission-led New Zealand technology company with global ambitions, using technology and data to make a real, positive difference in the world.
  • Work on real product features that turn complex sustainability data into reliable insights for leading organisations.
  • Learn from experienced engineers who will share their expertise, challenge your thinking and support your development.
  • Gain practical experience with modern frameworks and AI-assisted engineering tools and

bring fresh ideas about how we can improve our product.

  • Thrive in a fun, supportive culture where collaboration and fresh ideas come first.

What you’ll do

  • Contribute to new features and improvements across our platform, writing clean, maintainable and well-tested code.
  • Work across front-end and back-end code and help solve data challenges that turn large volumes of information into useful insights.
  • Help turn product ideas and requirements into practical technical solutions, contributing creative thinking and working through technical challenges with the team.
  • Take part in technical discussions, testing, debugging and code reviews, and learn how we deploy and support our platform, to help keep our products reliable and maintainable.
  • Work closely with developers, product managers and other stakeholders to deliver features that meet customer needs and business goals, learning from feedback and building your technical skills along the way.
  • Use modern development tools, including AI-assisted coding, to work efficiently, and contribute ideas for improving our products, tools and development practices.
  • Build your understanding of our technology stack and development processes and

identify opportunities to improve the platform.

What you’ll bring

  • A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, completed or nearing completion.
  • A solid grasp of programming fundamentals, including software design, data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience building software through coursework, internships or personal projects, ideally with full-stack technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js and React.
  • A basic understanding of APIs, databases and how web applications fit together.
  • Exposure to Agile development practices and workflows.
  • A can-do attitude, curiosity and strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • A love for collaboration and a willingness to contribute to a supportive, idea-sharing team environment.

What will set you apart

We’re particularly interested in graduates who have built things beyond their coursework, whether through personal projects, open-source contributions, hackathons or programming competitions. Commercial experience isn’t essential.

We’d love to hear what you’ve built, the challenges you ran into and how you solved them, including how you’ve used AI-assisted tools and checked the code they produce.
