About the job:

We’re looking for a practical and organised Depot Mechanic to join our team in Christchurch. This is a hands-on role where your practical mechanical experience will help keep our vehicles, generators, plant and operational equipment safe, reliable and ready to support essential water services.

The role involves:

• Completing routine servicing, preventative maintenance, minor repairs and inspections on vehicles, trailers, generators, small plant and operational equipment.

• Supporting local breakdowns with practical fault-finding, jump-start assistance, minor repairs and initial mechanical assessments.

• Carrying out calibration and electrical test-and-tag activities when trained and authorised, with support to build these skills where needed.

• Working closely with field teams, suppliers and managers to reduce downtime, improve asset reliability and keep our workshops safe, tidy and well organised.

What you’ll need:

• A current New Zealand Class 1 driver licence.

• A relevant trade qualification or equivalent experience in automotive, diesel, mechanical engineering or small-engine maintenance is essential.

• Practical hands-on maintenance experience across vehicles, trailers, small plant, construction equipment or similar machinery.

• Mechanical fault-finding ability and confidence using workshop tools and test equipment safely.

• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to keep accurate electronic and paper records for servicing, inspections, calibration and defects.

• A safety-focused, practical and service-minded approach, with the confidence to ask questions, escalate specialist work and keep learning.

• Willingness to complete calibration and electrical test-and-tag competency training if you do not already hold these skills.

• Desirable skills include automotive, diesel, mechanical engineering or small-engine trade training, a Class 2 licence, forklift endorsement, generator, hydraulic, trailer or field breakdown experience.

All preferred candidates will be required to complete preemployment checks to the employer’s satisfaction. These checks include but are not limited to, Ministry of Justice criminal conviction report, medical assessment, and drug and alcohol testing.
