About the job

Come and make a difference with us

At Western Bay of Plenty District Council, everything we do is about making the everyday better — and helping our communities thrive, now and into the future.

Western Bay is a District undergoing significant growth and transformation. From planning for future communities to delivering the infrastructure that supports them, we’re focused on getting the fundamentals right — and preparing for what comes next.

We’re also focused on our people - we believe in investing in and empowering our teams to grow, lead, and achieve their goals. Because when our people thrive, our communities do too.

If you're motivated by making the everyday better, helping people thrive, and leaving things better than you found them — we’d love to hear from you.

The opportunity

Looking for paid summer work that gives you real-world experience and a chance to contribute to projects that matter?

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is looking for motivated summer students to join us from November 2026 to mid-February 2027. This is a great opportunity to build practical experience in local government, work alongside knowledgeable teams, and get a closer look at how infrastructure, community spaces and essential services are planned, maintained and improved.

As an Asset Data Officer, you’ll help us review and update important information about Council’s infrastructure assets. That might include checking asset condition, gathering information in the field, and updating our asset management systems so we have accurate data to support smart decisions for the future.

It’s meaningful, hands-on work that helps us better understand the assets our communities rely on every day — from roads and reserves through to water services, facilities, emergency management and solid waste.

We have opportunities across our Water Services, Transport, Reserves and Facilities, Emergency Management and Solid Waste teams, so let us know your area of interest when you apply.

This could be a great fit if you’re studying in an area such as Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Asset Management or a related field, and you’re keen to gain practical experience while making a contribution to your local community.

To set you up for success, you’ll bring:

· A full driver licence

· The legal right to work in New Zealand

· A positive, can-do attitude

· A good sense of humour and willingness to get stuck in

· Confidence working both as part of a team and independently

· An eye for detail and curiosity to understand how things work

· Clear communication skills and the confidence to ask questions

You don’t need to know everything on day one — we’ll support you along the way. What matters most is that you’re keen to learn, happy to get involved, and ready to make the most of the experience.

Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work permit.

Applications close 11.55pm Sunday, 4 October 2026
